Dr. Som is a Professor of Internal Medicine, the Vice Chair of the Internal Medicine Department and the Medical Director of the recently accredited Physician Assistant Program at Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences. She graduated from University North Texas Health Science Center with her DO and master’s in clinical research and Education in 2006. She is completing her residency in Internal Medicine in 2009 at Oklahoma State University Medical Center. She has been a faculty member in Internal Medicine since 2009 at OSU. In addition, she currently serves as the Chief of Staff at OSU Medical Center. She was the past program director of Internal Medicine at OSU and transitioned the program from AOA to ACGME accreditation. She helped develop the Cardiology and Gastroenterology programs at OSU for ACGME accreditation. She supports the DIO at OSU on special program reviews of all programs sponsored by or affiliated with OSU. She recently has been appointed as Associate DIO at OSU.
Dr. Som has participated in several clinical research trials including three during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has also published over 20 research and review trials with residents and medical students as co-authors. She also has received the Regents Distinguished Teaching Award and the Attending of the Year for her mentorship role with residents and students at OSU. In 2020, she also received the American College of Osteopathic Internists teacher of the year award.
Dr. Som served as the medical leader for OSU during the COVID-19 pandemic and participated in several press conferences with the Governor of Oklahoma and the Mayor of Tulsa. She recently received the Regents Distinguished Service Award for her leadership role during the pandemic. She was recognized in Tulsa People as a COVID hero.
Dr. Som is a Crucial Conversations Trainer and provides annual training to OSU Residents and Medical Students.
Dr. Som is board certified in Internal Medicine and was named a Fellow in 2013 by the American College of Osteopathic Internists. She has served across a variety of organizations involved in medical education including the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME), American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and the Osteopathic Founders Foundation (OFF). She serves as an executive committee member of the board of directors of the NBOME, as the Vice Chair of the Council of Osteopathic Graduate Medical Education with the AOA, and the chair of the OFF.
